Painter and stage designer, born in Melbourne, Australia, who studied ballet with Edouard Borovansky, 1940–1, and at evening classes at Melbourne Technical College, 1942–3. He designed décors and held solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. After, in 1950 gaining a British Council Scholarship, Rowell studied theatre design in London, 1950–1, and between 1950–60 designed for productions at the Old Vic, Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Royal Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet and many other companies, in 1956 returning to Australia to design two operas for the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust. In England, Rowell took part in group shows, including Three Australian Artists, at Bear Lane Gallery, Oxford, 1960, and Recent Australian Paintings at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, 1961.
