Biography

George “Monty” Motram Moorhouse

Born in Penrith in 1882, Moorhouse was to train under the influential artist Augustus John. Lecturing at Manchester College of Art, Moorhouse was to exhibit at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal West of England Academy, amongst others.

With his wife Blanche, they resided at Arnside in Westmorland and it was whilst there that Moorhouse was first invited to exhibit with The Lake Artists Society in 1910, becoming a member two years later in 1912, aged thirty.

Both George and wife Blanche were well known for their support of other artists, especially those in the early-years of their careers, and it was some thirty-six years after joining, that George became the President of The Lake Artists Society, from 1946-1949. George Moorhouse was also a founder member of the Kendal Art Society, being its Vice President from 1932-1940.

George died in his native county in 1960, aged seventy-eight.
