From the estate of the artist
Based on Ludolf Bakhuizen (1631 -1708) Seascape (Dutch frigate towing a skiff)
The right-hand painting is a detail taken from the foreground of Bakhuisen’s painting of a Dutch frigate. The small sailboat is docking at a pier in dramatic light. Bakhuizen painted numerous stormy seascapes with sailing ships struggling in threatening skies. It was something that Charles Oakley felt very at home with, combining his love of the sea and boats. In his painting, he places the painting to the right of an arched corridor. Part of another Bakhuizen-inspired seascape with sailing ship can be seen to the left. A tiled floor leads away through the two mysterious corridors, presenting another challenging exercise in perspective so much relished by the artist.
