A whole collection of new work to Castlegate

This week has been a busy one. Over twenty new works arrived through the Georgian Castlegate door, both Contemporary and Modern British (20th century); we’ve grouped all together into a New Exhibition and will be rehanging much of the gallery over the next day or so.
A significant part of the new work through the door is a twelve-painting body of work from the very talented Stefan Orlowski. We’ve worked with Stefan for a number of years now and over the last year he’s been working away in his Ulvertson studio, producing what we truly believe (and have expressed to him) his best body of work to date; the progression is evident.
The body of work highlights Stefan’s ongoing fascination with people and place, its seasonality and his reflection within those places. Stefan’s work is largely created plein-air, immersed within the landscape, even elements of this flow through to his interior studio paintings. It’s an observation of environments, both outside and in, seeking to bring a sense of the lives lived amongst and in spite of those environments.
Re-acquired this week are two small mixed media paintings by the late Bill Peascod. We sold both some ten years ago or so and it’s always good to welcome works by Bill back into the gallery; two small gems, for sure.
We’ve also acquired a painting of the London Underground circa 1970 by the wonderfully named Fermin Rocker. Very much of its time, it reminded me of my near two-decade working life in London, albeit I never saw a platform as uncrowded as this.
Other works include several additions to our affordable Mid Century Modern Alternatives selection, two new contemporary paintings by Marie Scott and perhaps the best John Thompson painting we’ve seen in many a year. Works Day Out takes me right back to my growing-up years near Rochdale, when the Wakes Week concept still prevailed; a week when most factories would close and all would take a trip to the seaside. Fabulous.
All for now,
