20th Century and Contemporary new works

13th February, 2026

A plethora of new art

It’s been a busy few weeks, up and down the motorways of the UK, sourcing both Modern British (20th C) and Contemporary art to bring back to Castlegate House.

All NEW WORKS may be viewed HERE with a wider listing of works currently on show at the gallery in our EXHIBITION page HERE.

New works acquired include those by Stephen Chambers (RA), Josef Herman (RA) and Anthony Whishaw (RA) along with contemporary works by the wonderful Alice Campbell and David Storey, amongst others.

Stephen Chambers (RA)

Firstly, three works from 2006 by Stephen Chambers (RA). The three formed part of a small series directly influenced by the works of poet and artist William Blake (1757 – 1827). In Stephen’s own words, "I am interested in people that belong nowhere. The mavericks, the misfits, the outliers. Those people that couldn’t join a gang, even if they wished to. This is Blake; The singular outsider wrestling with his place in the world."; and with the paintings being "Reverential love letters to an artist who was the ‘gate-master of the misfits’ club’." The three make a wonderful group, but we're equally content to find them individual homes.

Alice Campbell

Secondly, we’ve taken delivery of a number of new paintings from the wonderful Alice Campbell, inspired by her time last year on residency in Arraiolos, Portugal. We’ve shown Alice’s work for eight years now, shortly after her graduation from the highly respected Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, and Alice never disappoints; a real talent for now and for the future.

Josef Herman (RA)

We’ve long been fans of the works of the late Josef Herman (RA), buying (and selling) several over the years. Woman Sitting on the Shore, circa 1960, was one we couldn’t pass up. Small but perfectly formed; wonderfully painted and glowing, it’s a fine example of a Josef Herman oil, and brighter in tone than many.

James Ardern Grant

Next, a wonderful portrait from 1946 by James Ardern Grant; of friend and fellow artist Harold Workman, it’s about as 1940s as you can get, thankfully the hat hasn’t made it into men's 2026 fashion, but there’s always 2027. A wonderful of-its-era portrait.

David Storey

Back onto the contemporary theme, we’ve also taken a number of paintings from David Storey; always of quality, always popular, we remain very proud to exhibit David’s works at Castlegate House.

Anthony Whishaw (RA)

Finally, we have two works from 1958 by one of the UK's most senior Royal Academicians, Anthony Whishaw. Now in his ninety-sixth year, the two portraits in question were completed when in Spain over the summer of 1958, remaining in the same Kensington studio, in the same place, until 2026; now brought back to life and looking for their first custodians.

We’ve also acquired works by Sheila Fell (RA), Duncan Grant and Joan Eardley, but more of those in maybe our next newsletter, when back from cleaning and reframing.

All for now,

Steve and Christine
