A rare small 1960s Sheila Fell (RA) painting

28th July, 2025

Acquired from a private collection

We’ve just acquired a wonderful quite scarce small-sized oil on canvas by the late Sheila Fell (RA), from a private collection.

Exhibition provenance

Planting Potatoes i dates to 1966 and was exhibited at Sheila’s solo exhibition the following year at the Stone Gallery, Newcastle.

Impasto and earth

It’s shouts so much of what Sheila’s 1960s work is known for. The earthy tones, the thick impasto oil paint, turning the mundane activities of rural life into a work of art.

Fully inscribed and labelled verso

The back of the painting bears title, date and name in Sheila’s hand to the canvas overlap along with the 1967 Stone Gallery label to the frame.

Illustrated in the Catalogue Raisonne

Illustrated in the recently published and wonderful Catalogue Raisonne by Andrew and Eleanor Bradley (catalogue number 234, page 272), this is a seldom available opportunity to become the custodian of a wonderful yet small (and similarly more relatively affordable) painting by Sheila Fell from the 1960s.
