Born in 1910, Jean Simian initially studied at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers, subsequently graduating from the École du Louvre in Paris, then enrolling in 1929 at the academy of André Lhote. 

Winner of the Casa Vélasquez Prize, Jean Simian painted and exhibited often in Algeria, France, Spain and Morocco. His first exhibition took place at the Galerie du Minaret in Algiers in 1941. After returning from WWII his works “brought back from the front” on military themes were exhibited at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris.

Jean Simian had his final exhibition in 1988 in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert bringing together many major pieces of his work throughout his career. Jean died at his home in Rueil-Malmaison, France in September 1991.
