Connect Art Fair, New Works and Coast to Coast

12th March, 2023

Connect Art Fair at the Mall Galleries

For anyone in London or wishing to travel to London from 22-26 March, we’ll be exhibiting at the Connect Art Fair at the Mall Galleries. Attached you’ll find a complimentary ticket for two which you only need show a screen image of at the door, or you can download via the fair website, so do feel free to use. It’s a small great quality art fair very much in the heart of London, so do come along if able.

New Work

We continue to travel the UK seeking out and acquiring new works for the gallery. This last week saw us acquire works by some of the biggest names in 20th British art, including Frank Auerbach and Keith Vaughan. The Auerbach is a wonderful drawing from the late 80s of Mornington Crescent whilst the latter is a 1951 oil painting titled Sketch for the return of Odysseus, with impeccable provenance. We've also acquired a number of paintings by the late Percy Kelly, which may also be seen on the Latest Work section of the website.

Norman Cornish, Sarah Sewing 1963

We’ve also reacquired one of my favourite ever paintings by Norman Cornish. Sarah Sewing, from 1963, may not be the more usual pub or pit road scene, but it’s a remarkable portrait of Sarah, his wife, engaged in 1960s domesticity. Painted on brown paper, it has a looseness and freedom not usually found in Norman’s oils; it’s just a wonderful portrait by an artist of his wife; sold by us in our 2017 Cornish at Castlegate exhibition, now reacquired and available for its next custodian.

This next week takes us to Glasgow, Newcastle, Exeter and Cirencester; we’ll be bringing back works by the likes of Ivon Hitchens and Terry Frost, and hopefully more, so keep an eye out on the Latest Work section of the website and if not already, do follow us on both Instagram and Facebook, where acquisitions quite often appear first.

Coast to Coast exhibition

This coming week also sees the final few days of our current exhibition, Lawrence Quigley, Coast to Coast. We’ve had a really wonderful reaction to Lawrie’s paintings of this famous Alfred Wainwright trail, with a seemingly constant run of folks coming into the gallery to view the forty five paintings on show. The final day is this Saturday, 18th March. Due to the aforementioned Connect Art Fair, the gallery will be closed for the subsequent week, commencing 20th, other than by prior appointment.

All for now,

Steve and Christine
