Born in Oldham in 1927, Russell left school to become an engineer, a career that was to last until his retirement in 1992. Throughout this time, Russell continued to paint. His engineering background and draughtsmanship showing through in the exactness of his work. For thirty years he taught art part time, and exhibited his own work at numerous galleries, including though the Royal Society of British Artists, The Chenil Gallery, London, Uppermill Gallery and Tib Lane Gallery, Manchester. Russell’s work is held in collections nationwide, and has a unique style in capturing both tone and form of his Pennine home.
