New Arrivals and Things to See

2nd February, 2015

Glasgow Boy, Joan Eardley Glasgow Boy, Joan Eardley

Happy February! We'll soon be welcoming in Spring. Planning gallery exhibitions two years in advance is a sure fire way of watching your life run away with you.. Anyway, here's some more news. Firstly, we've just taken delivery of nineteen new pots from the talented Tim Lake Tim is a great potter who, in our opinion, under-prices his work, and one day he'll listen to us, so take note now, before he does! All can be shipped anywhere in the UK for £10 postage.

Next, at the other end of the price spectrum, for the collectors out there, we're thrilled to have been able to acquire a number of works by two of the most important names in British Twentieth century art. The first, by Duncan Grant. Duncan was a hugely influential name; a member of the Bloomsbury Group. This, a painting of his latter-to-be lover, Paul Roche, in the first year of their meeting, in 1946, is important in the history of Duncan, and also Paul, himself a noted poet and novelist.

Next, we're equally thrilled to have acquired two paintings by Joan Eardley (RSA) Joan has become regarded as one of the most important Scottish artists of the last century, if not the UK. We've acquired both a work from her Glasgow "slum" period and her Catterline land/seascape period, both with wonderful provenance.

Moving on to our New Talent exhibition, opening its doors on the 28th March, I recently visited both Jess and Alex in their studios (London and Selkirk). It's a mix of emotions; excitement from us, nerves from them! Some amazing work, genuinely; I think people will be astounded by what these two young artists have produced.

I'd planned on mentioning here a new Bill Bell colliery painting we'd acquired, but it sold almost immediately after I posted an image on Facebook at the weekend. We use Social Media a lot, so if you want to keep updated in real-time to news and new works etc, follow us on Castlegate House Gallery on Facebook, or @Castlegate_Art on Twitter.

Finally, for anyone in the Southport area in the next couple of months, there's a great exhibition taking place at the newly refurbished Atkinson Gallery. This is a showcase of works by two Lancashire artists, namely L S Lowry and Theodore Major. We're huge fans of Theodore's work, and are always looking to bring new examples to Castlegate.
If you get a chance, go along and take a look, it's worth it.

All for now,
Steve and Christine
