25th June, 2014
We're currently awaiting the catalogue for our forthcoming exhibition to arrive from the printers - "June Bennett - A Celebration". As many of you will know, June sadly died last Summer, and we've been working with Mike, husband and fellow artist at Castlegate, to put on this exhibition.
There will be forty works on show, most will be available to acquire, with examples ranging from paintings done under her maiden name of June Steer in the 1950s, to her very last painting, completed just three weeks before she died. We hope to get the emailed and physical catalogues out the early part of week commencing the 7th July, with all works available to "red dot" from then.
The exhibition will be launched in the gallery on Saturday, 19th July, and will last until 9th August. A reception will be held on the 19th, with Mike in attendance. Please make a note in your diaries, it's a fascinating collection of works from one of Cumbria's most celebrated and collected contemporary artists. We'll be closed on Friday the 18th to allow for hanging June's works, so don't get cross when you push on the door and nothing happens !
Our current exhibition, the ever changing Spring Selection (OK, I know it's now Summer) will continue until the 19th July http://www.castlegatehouse.co.uk/exhibition-details.php?EID=47 Many new works have been added recently, so it's always worth keeping an eye out!
If you wish to keep bang up to date with events in the gallery, it may be worth following us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Castlegate-House-Gallery/271331208093 We tend not to bombard people with emails, so Facebook can give you a fuller picture of what's going on. You'll see very recently we've been talking about working with a hugely talented new artist, Jessica Pigott, who we discovered at the Wimbledon College or Arts and are hugely excited about; also you'll see my ponderings over a painting we've recently acquired by the famous and highly collected artist, Joan Eardley, together with new pots from William Plumptre. It's worth keeping up to date.
Something else to mention, we're handing over the gallery on Saturday 5th July from 5:30 to a group hosting a poetry event. Titled The Rainbow, the event will host the literary talents of Jennifer Copley, Clare Crossman and Jeremy Over. Refreshments will be served and tickets can be obtained on the door that evening for £5. For all you literary folk out there, an event not to be missed !
Finally, it's been a tough few months for Cockermouth. Major roadworks in the town have been ongoing since March. Finally, the end is in sight, with just a couple of weeks to go. In actual fact, the traffic disruption has never been that great, but the possibility of it has kept people away. Cockermouth is a wonderful small Georgian town filled with independent shops. We're lucky, we have the website as a significant driver of our business, but many many retailers don't. On behalf of the town, your support is very very much appreciated. Come along, we have all manner of wonderful shops and places to eat; it's a cracking town in a cracking location.
All for now,
Steve and Christine
