Percy Kelly was born into a poor family in Workington on the industrial coast of west Cumbria. He left school at 14 to join the postal service. Then he served in the war where his extraordinary talent was spotted and he spent time in Whitehall drawing plans and diagrams. He was befriended by Churchill. He went to Carlisle College of Art as a mature student where he learned printmaking. After several successful exhibitions, he decided he could not sell any work. This and his transvestism was a contributing cause of the breakdown of both his marriages. He died in exile from his beloved Cumberland, a sad and lonely person. Since hids death in 1993, he has seen a meteoric interest in his work with 2 pieces in the Government Collection. |
